Vasco DA Gama debuted in 1916 with a historic 10-1 loss to Paladino FC. Founded in 1898 as a rowing club, Vasco da Gama consolidated its first glories in water, but it was only in November 1915 that the club approved the creation of the football department. The debut of Vasco's football took place on May 3, 1916, on a Sunday, at 15:30, at the Botafogo field, in General Severiano. The Vasco team was defeated 10-1, suffering the biggest official loss in its history. Moving forward, the club remained firm and achieved its first official victory on October 29, 1916, by 2-1, over River Football Club. Journalist José da Silva Rocha, known as 'Rochinha', reported that many guests felt discouraged when they saw the score. However, Vasco da Gama did not give up and continued to fight. In 1923, the club won the Campeonato Carioca, becoming the first winner formed mostly by black, working-class, and poor players. The victory was an important milestone in the club's history and symbolized the overcoming of obstacles. Vasco da Gama proved that it was willing to face challenges and build its reputation. With still incipient structure, Vasco affiliated with the Liga Metropolitana de Sports Athleticos and decided to debut officially in formal championships. The lineup of the Vasco team in the debut included Azevedo, Augusto, Sampaio, Barreto, Vitorino, Alemão, Adão, Oscar, Moraes, and two players named Oliveira. The result shocked the fans and members who followed the game. But Vasco da Gama did not get discouraged and continued to fight. The 10-1 loss was not just a statistical setback, but symbolized the starting point of Vasco da Gama's transformation into one of the giants of Brazilian football. The club would face resistance, but would consolidate itself as a symbol of racial inclusion, popularity, and success. Less than a decade later, Vasco would win the Campeonato Carioca, becoming the first winner formed mostly by black, working-class, and poor players. The historic victory also defeated the institutional racism of the time, immortalized as 'Camisas Negras'.
